More About Mesothelioma Treatment at Mount Sinai Health System

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer diagnosed in approximately 2,500 people in the United States each year. General oncologists and thoracic surgeons do not have the experience needed to treat this unique disease, which is why patients should search for a cancer center with a team of mesothelioma specialists.

Mount Sinai Health System is affiliated with the Tisch Cancer Institute and the Icahn School of Medicine. Mount Sinai is home to the New York Mesothelioma Program.

Dr. Andrea Wolf is the Director of the New York Mesothelioma Program at Mount Sinai and leads an experienced team of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and more.

Dr. Raja Flores, the chief of thoracic surgery, is the specialist for pleural mesothelioma (forms in the lining of the lungs). He’s a highly skilled surgeon who sees around 80 mesothelioma cases a year. This volume is easily one of the highest in the world.

Dr. Daniel Labow was the specialist for peritoneal mesothelioma (forms in the lining of the abdominal cavity) but moved to a different hospital, Nuvance Health, in 2023. His official title was surgical oncologist. He has performed more than 750 surgeries involving HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy).

Tisch Cancer Institute is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Not many cancer centers receive this designation.

Mount Sinai Health System’s location in New York City is easily accessible. It’s within a reasonable drive for any patients in the northeast. It’s also a major airline destination for out‑of‑area patients.

High‑Volume Center for Mesothelioma Surgery

Mount Sinai is one of the leading cancer institutions for mesothelioma treatment and support care. The pair of specialists on staff perform more than 50 surgeries per year. Dr. Flores said he operates on approximately 50 of 80 pleural mesothelioma cases coming to him. Dr. Labow said prior to leaving Mt. Sinai that he operated on a handful of peritoneal mesothelioma cases.

The primary oncologist for pleural mesothelioma is Dr. Jorge Gomez. Dr. Kenneth Rosenzweig is the primary radiation oncologist.

“He invented the radiation protocol for mesothelioma,” Dr. Flores said.

The treatment team also includes nurses and an anesthesiologist. Dr. Labow said the group is so accustomed to HIPEC surgery that it was labeled “routine” despite being a complex operation. He usually worked with Dr. Peter Kozuch to help patients diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma.

“The fact it got so routine says to me we’ve done our job,” he said.

Focus on Coordinating With Team

Andrea Wolfe is the program coordinator and a thoracic surgeon. Her role is an example of how Mount Sinai’s staff wants to make patients and their families more at ease.

“We’re trying to make it a multidisciplinary thing where you get every aspect of your mesothelioma care here at Mount Sinai,” Dr. Flores explained.

Dr. Flores performs both extrapleural pneumonectomy surgery and pleurectomy/decortication surgery for pleural mesothelioma. He also coordinates with the medical oncologist for systemic chemotherapy and immunotherapy after surgery.

Dr. Labow and his colleagues performed cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC, which sends a high concentration of chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity. This prevents it from circulating in the bloodstream and killing healthy blood cells.

“This allows for fewer side effects and better killing of the cancer cells,” Dr. Labow said prior to leaving Mount Sinai. “It can also reduce the need for regular chemotherapy, although it is usually given in addition to regular chemo, and not instead of it. It gives us a new option to fight the most difficult to treat cancers.”
